Historically Mothers' Night was a pagan Anglo-Saxon and Germanic winter festival celebrated on the night of the winter solstice or Christmas Eve and marking the beginning of the Yule season. It was a time for honouring female ancestors, matriarchs, and protective spirits known as the Dísir, as well as mother goddesses. Families lit candles or Yule logs, cleaned hearths, shared ancestral stories, and left offerings to honor the women of their lineage.

Mother Night in the context of this session, is an invitation to spend one moon cycle honouring the wisdom of the feminine within. As we cross the threshold into the darkest time of year we will continue to explore the theme of nourishment, this thread we have been following through the tale of Hansel and Gretel. We will gather by the warmth of the fireside, in the soft glow of candlelight and let go into the nourishing darkness of the maternal night, into the surrender and pause of the body-soul's longing to journey in and down. 

Together, we will follow Mother Night into the wisdom of rest, stillness and gestation. Mother Night who holds the promise of rebirth close to her bosom, keeping safe the spark of life that remains even amidst the darkest coldest night. She is the bright warm light of the hearth fire, and the insulating warmth of the deep down black earth, that holds the seeds of spring far below the frozen ground – safe, held, protected. She knows the winter moons are times of deep surrender, times of resting and dreaming and keeping vigil.

Through the dance we will ask ourselves, what is my relationship with the night? With the dark? With stillness? What nourishment does my bodysoul crave at this time? And can I let go into the wisdom of the deep feminine within my own being?
